Tapestry has been a known wall art form since ealry Greek times.  Samples of Greek tapestry wall hangings have been found preserved from the 3rd-2nd century BCE.

Wall Tapestry found a new stage in Europe in the early fourteenth century. France became the world's leading producer specializing in fine wool wall tapestries which were sold to decorate palaces and castles all over Europe.  Few of these hanging wall tapestry survived the French Revolution as hundreds were burnt to reocover the gold thread that was often woven into the tapestry. Arras  is still used to refer to a rich tapestry no matter where it was woven.
